Deeply satisfied with their back yard and the memories embedded in their home, our clients asked ecco for a solution that would preserve their outdoor space and give them the dream they shared – to live in a larger Foursquare. They had long admired the Foursquare style of their existing home, but they needed more space. They felt especially attached to their house and neighborhood, so they did not want to find a larger Foursquare in another neighborhood.
In light of the somewhat small footprint of the existing home, in conjunction with an increasingly suspicious existing foundation and awkward access into a shallow basement, ecco and our clients agreed it would be best to lift the existing one-story home to design a new full basement and main floor below. The existing basement was demolished, the site was excavated, and new stem walls were poured, creating a roomy, sturdy and truly beautiful new foundation to build on. Our clients’ new daylight basement now includes workshop space, extra storage, a guest room, a laundry room and a mudroom. Their new foundation also served to steady the existing level as it waited high in midair while a story was built below to support it. The new main level gives a generous portion of square footage to all the uses our clients requested, while their existing level was slightly reconfigured to become the new second level with two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a Master Suite.
Our clients now command a view of the Space Needle, they were able to keep the yard and trees they grew to love, and they will soon live in their own tailored version of an American Foursquare home.
